826CHI's Literacy Panel

  • Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co. 1276 North Milwaukee Avenue Chicago, IL, 60622 United States (map)

In conjunction with Wicker Park Lit Fest, the Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co. will be hosting a panel discussion on the intersection of education and social justice! We'll be discussing the best practices for teaching literacy – reading, critical, and cultural – in the classroom.

Join us on Saturday, September 16th at 3pm at 1276 N. Milwaukee Ave. for a rousing discussion and Q&A moderated by Maria Villarreal, 826CHI's Director of Programs.

The panel will feature four inspiring educators:

• DR. SAKEENA EVERETT, PhD, Director of Research and Outreach of the Black Male Early Literacy Impact Project at UIC! Dr. Everett presently works with graduate students to investigate different literacy methodologies in 3rd-5th grade classrooms and has a background teaching middle and high schoolers in Houston.
• DR. HORACE HALL, PhD, Associate Professor of Human Development, Counseling, and Special Education in the DePaul College of Education and Co-Founder and Co-Director of the REAL Youth Program (http://www.realprogram.org/contact.htm)! Dr. Hall has a background teaching high schoolers in Chicago Public Schools.
• MARIA RIVERA, champion of young people's voices and veteran educator in the Chicago Public School system. Maria has pioneered programs with 826CHI and Chicago Shakespeare Theater for her high school students!
• JEN VINCENT, writer, blogger, and educator, who serves as an Instructional Coach for elementary schools within the Mundelein School District 75 and who connects educators and encourages them to write through her blog, Teach Mentor Texts (www.teachmentortexts.com)! Vincent spent 10 years as a Hearing Itinerant Teacher for students who were deaf of hard of hearing in the Chicagoland area.

The event is free with a suggested donation of $5, all of which will benefit 826CHI, a nonprofit writing center in Wicker Park that offers free after-school tutoring and writing programming to over 2,500 students in over 52 zipcodes across Chicago!
