"Buy local and read local at the 5th annual Chicago Book Expo (chicagobookexpo.org) on Sunday, November 13th, noon-5pm at Columbia College, 1104 S. Wabash. This free celebration of Chicago’s literary community features 20 programs and workshops with local authors, plus 75 exhibitors selling books from local presses and literary organizations. Programs include a kickoff event paying tribute to Roger Ebert, introduced by Chaz Ebert; a panel on Chicago music and books moderated by Jim DeRogatis and featuring James Krakow, Sally Timms of the Mekons, and Michael Dugan; a conversation between activist and educator Bill Ayers (Demand the Impossible!) and community organizer James Thindwa, and much more. Presenting authors include Bill Savage, Neil Steinberg, Eve Ewing, Angela Jackson, Gina Frangello, Alison Flowers, Dominic Pacyga, Shawn Shiflett, Marnie Galloway, Gint Aras, Kate Hannigan, Scott Roberts, Jay Bonansinga, Jody Lynn Nye, and many more. All programs are free and open to the public; advance registration is not required.
New this year is a special, all-day program called “So You Want to Be An Author,” a one-day professional development seminar held in partnership with Columbia College’s Career Center. Sessions include novel pitch sessions with agents from major literary agencies (both open mic and one-on-one), as well as programs on submission errors, creating a career as a writer, and more. This special program is organized by Myth-Ink, Columbia College Chicago’s student science fiction, fantasy, and horror writing organization.
